Small entryway storage: fit everything into 2 m²
Organise a narrow hall or tiny entryway: shoe cabinet depths, hook heights, walkway widths and no-drill options, with official prices.
The entryway is the first thing you see and the place clutter collects fastest: shoes, coats, bags, keys, post, umbrellas. In many apartments it is only a metre wide. The way to make it work is to store vertically, measure depths carefully and keep the door's swing and the walkway clear.
Measure the hall properly
Measure the width of the hall, the length of free wall, the door swing (both the front door and any doors opening into the hall) and the height to the ceiling. Note sockets, light switches, the intercom and radiators, since you cannot cover them.
- Walkway: keep at least 70-80 cm clear. In a 100 cm hall, that leaves only 20-30 cm for furniture on one side.
- Door swing: nothing may block the front door from opening fully; check the floor and the height of the handle.
Choose the right depth
Depth is everything in a hall.
- Standard shoe cabinets with tilting compartments are 17-30 cm deep. A slim tilting cabinet of about 18-20 cm holds shoes at an angle and leaves room to walk.
- Open shoe racks are typically 25-35 cm deep.
- Coat hooks project 5-10 cm, plus about 20-30 cm for the coats themselves.
- Baskets and boxes on a shelf: around 30 cm.
If the hall is under 110 cm wide, choose a shoe cabinet under 25 cm deep and avoid a bench.
Store in three heights
Think of the wall in three bands:
- Low (0-50 cm): shoes and baskets for daily items such as bags, scarves and dog leads. Baskets around 30 cm hide the mess.
- Middle (50-120 cm): a cabinet top for keys, post and a small tray. This is the "drop zone".
- High (150-180 cm): hooks for coats and a shelf for hats and seasonal items. Standard hook height for adults is around 160-170 cm; add a row at 100-120 cm for children.
Limit what lives there
An entryway is not long-term storage. A practical rule: two pairs of shoes per person in the hall, the rest in a wardrobe; one coat per person on the hooks in each season. Out-of-season items go into boxes higher up or elsewhere.
No-drill and renter-friendly options
- Freestanding shoe cabinets: many slim cabinets must be anchored to the wall because they tip when the compartments open. If you cannot drill, choose an open low rack or a low cabinet that is wider than it is tall.
- Freestanding coat stands or hanger stands: no screws needed, but they take a footprint of about 40-50 cm.
- Over-door hooks: on the inside of a cupboard door or bathroom door.
- Adhesive hooks: for keys and light bags only; test the wall first.
Add a mirror and light
A mirror makes a narrow hall look twice as wide and is useful on your way out. A long mirror on the side wall or behind the door works best. If the hall has only one dim ceiling light, add a small battery lamp on the cabinet or a warm bulb. Entryways often have no daylight, so a warm 2,700-3,000 K light makes them feel welcoming.
A sample layout for a 2 x 1 m entry
- Front door at one end, opening inward along the long wall.
- Opposite wall: a shoe cabinet about 20 cm deep, 50 cm wide.
- Above it: a tray for keys and a mirror.
- At 165 cm: a row of four hooks.
- Under the hooks: two baskets for bags and scarves.
That leaves about 75-80 cm walkway and nothing in the door's path.
Common mistakes
A bench in a hall that is too narrow, so you squeeze past it daily. Hooks too close to the door, so coats catch when it opens. Deep open shelves that collect random items. And no place for post, so it spreads across every surface in the home.

- Hall width, door swing and switches measured.
- At least 70-80 cm walkway.
- Shoe storage under 25 cm deep in narrow halls.
- Three heights: low baskets, middle drop zone, high hooks.
- Two pairs of shoes per person.
- Tipping furniture anchored or avoided.
