One-burner dinner in a rental kitchen: where to put the burner, the board and the pan

The short answer: one deep pan with a lid, about 24-26 cm (10 in) across, on one burner, with a cutting board of about 30 x 20 cm. That is a whole dinner. If the rental stove is broken or missing, a plug-in single induction burner does the job. If the counter is tiny, a board that bridges the sink gives you a second work surface without drilling anything.

A rental kitchen with one working burner and a strip of counter is enough for a proper dinner, as long as each thing has a place: the burner, the pan, the board and a spot where chopped ingredients wait. This guide shows where each one goes. Nothing needs drilling, and it all packs away when you move.

Where the burner goes

  • Use the stove's own ring if it works.
  • If it does not, use a plug-in induction burner on a flat, stable, heat-safe surface near a socket. Follow the burner's manual for clearance from walls and curtains.
  • Induction needs a pan with a magnetic base. A fridge magnet that sticks to the base is the quick test.

The pan

One deep pan with a lid, so pasta, water and sauce fit without boiling over. Look for about 24-26 cm (10 in) across and at least 5 cm deep. For induction, the listing must say it works on induction.

Deep pan with lid

The board

If you have about 30 cm of counter, that strip is your whole kitchen and the board is your only work surface. To gain space, put a board across the sink. Measure your sink opening first: the board has to rest on both edges.

Over-sink cutting board

Dexas over-the-sink cutting board with colander

11.5 x 20 in (29 x 51 cm) board that bridges the sink, with a collapsible 2.5 qt colander underneath and non-slip edges.

The wait spot and the dish rack

Chopped ingredients wait in a mug or small bowls, often on the windowsill, so the board only ever holds one thing. A roll-up rack lies across the sink and goes into a drawer afterwards, so wet dishes do not take the counter you just freed.

Small prep bowls

12 small clear glass bowls (1.5, 2.5 and 3.5 oz) that stack: the wait spot for sliced garlic, grated cheese or spices.

A one-burner dinner, step by step

Our one-pan tomato pasta for one is built for this setup. It takes 25 minutes in total (5 prep, 20 cooking).

  1. The onion goes into the pan first and softens while you slice the garlic.
  2. Add the tomatoes and water.
  3. Add the pasta and put the lid on. The pasta cooks in the sauce.
  4. The cheese waits in a mug until the end.

At no point does the board hold more than one ingredient.

More one-pan dinners: one-pot chili for one and one-pan pumpkin pasta. The full kit, with what to measure for each piece, is in small kitchen gear for one burner. For the rest of the kitchen, see small kitchen storage without drilling.

Before you start: a short checklist

  • The free counter measured, and a spot for the burner with air around it.
  • A fridge magnet sticks to the pan base, if you cook on induction.
  • The sink opening measured, if you use an over-sink board.
  • The lease or house rules checked for limits on cooking appliances.

Questions

Can I use a plug-in induction burner in a rental?

It plugs into a normal socket, so nothing is installed. Check your lease or house rules for any limits on cooking appliances, and follow the burner's safety instructions.

What pan works on one burner?

One deep pan with a lid, about 24-26 cm (10 in) across and at least 5 cm deep. For induction, the base must be magnetic.

I have almost no counter. Where do I chop?

On a board that sits over the sink. Measure the sink opening first.
