Small living room layout: measurements that make it work

Plan a small living room of 10-16 m²: sofa sizes, walkway widths, TV distance, zones and the furniture order that keeps a compact room open.

A small living room has to be a sofa room, a TV room, a reading room and often a home office. The trick is not to buy smaller versions of everything, but to decide what the room is for, give each job one clear zone, and keep the paths between them open. This guide uses real measurements so you can plan on paper before you move anything.

Start with the paths, not the sofa

Draw your room to scale on squared paper or in a free floor-planning tool, including doors, windows, radiators and sockets. Then draw the routes people walk: from the door to the sofa, to the window, to the balcony or kitchen. These routes need room.

  • Main walkways: 80-90 cm wide feels comfortable; 75 cm is the practical minimum.
  • Between sofa and coffee table: 40-45 cm, so you can reach a cup and still pass.
  • In front of a TV unit or shelf you need to open: about 70 cm.

Once the routes are drawn, whatever is left is where furniture can go. In many small rooms that space is smaller than people expect, and it explains why the room has felt crowded.

Choose the sofa for the room, not the showroom

Sofa depth matters more than width in a small room. Standard sofas are 85-100 cm deep; compact models are 75-85 cm. Every 10 cm of depth comes straight out of your walkway. A two-seater around 150-180 cm wide is the usual sweet spot for rooms of 10-14 m². Before you buy, tape the footprint on the floor with masking tape and leave it for a day. If you keep stepping around the tape, the sofa is too big.

Also check the way in: front door, stairwell turns and the living room door. A sofa must pass on its narrowest side, usually its depth or height. Our Will it fit? calculator does that check for you.

Put the biggest piece on the longest wall

In a narrow room, place the sofa against the long wall and keep the opposite wall shallow: a slim shelf or a TV on the wall, not a deep cabinet. Floating the sofa in the middle of a small room rarely works unless the room is wider than about 3.5 m.

If the room has a window on the short wall, that end is ideal for a reading chair. An armchair with a footprint of around 70 x 80 cm and a floor lamp beside it creates a second zone without walls.

Use height instead of floor

Small rooms run out of floor long before they run out of wall. Wall shelves, tall bookcases and wall-mounted desks free up floor space and draw the eye upward, which makes the ceiling feel higher. A cube shelf unit can serve as both storage and a low room divider. Keep anything taller than about 120 cm anchored to the wall for safety; if you rent, ask your landlord about anchoring and fill the holes when you move out.

A desk of about 90-100 cm wide and 55-60 cm deep is enough for a laptop and a monitor. Place it where the chair can be pushed under it when you are done, so it does not block a path.

TV distance and size

For a 43-inch TV, a viewing distance of roughly 1.6-2 m is comfortable; for 55 inches, around 2-2.5 m. In a small room this often means the TV can be wall-mounted directly opposite the sofa, and the TV unit can be replaced by a shallow shelf of 25-30 cm deep.

Light in layers

One ceiling light makes a small room flat. Plan three sources: ceiling or general light, a floor lamp by the reading chair, and a small lamp or LED strip on a shelf. Warm light around 2,700 K is the standard for living rooms. Put lamps in corners; lit corners push the walls visually outward.

Furniture that works twice

  • A tray table or nesting tables instead of one large coffee table: move them where you need them.
  • A storage ottoman or bench as seating and storage.
  • A cube shelf as a divider between sofa zone and desk zone.
  • A daybed in a studio as sofa by day and guest bed by night.

A sample plan for 3.2 x 4.2 m

  • Door in a corner of the short wall: keep a 90 cm path from the door to the window.
  • Long wall: two-seater sofa about 160 cm wide and 80 cm deep.
  • Opposite: wall-mounted TV over a shelf 30 cm deep.
  • Window end: armchair with a floor lamp.
  • Corner by the door: a wall desk with a chair that slides under.

Common mistakes

Pushing every piece against the walls with an empty middle. A rug that is too small (choose one where at least the front legs of the sofa sit on it). A deep sectional that fills half the room. And too many small decorative objects, which read as clutter. Fewer, larger pieces calm a small room.

Checklist

  • Room drawn to scale with doors and windows.
  • 75-90 cm walkways kept free.
  • Sofa depth checked, tape test done.
  • Biggest piece on the longest wall.
  • Storage goes up, not out.
  • Three light sources.
