Will it fit? How to measure a rental before you buy furniture, and where to put it

The short answer: check three numbers. First, the floor fit: the piece's width and depth against the space. Second, the walkway left in front: about 75-90 cm (30-36 in) on main paths, or about 60 cm (24 in) beside a bed. Third, the way in: the piece has to pass the narrowest door or hallway on its smallest side, usually the depth.

Our free Will it fit? tool does the arithmetic in cm or inches. This guide explains what to measure first and what to do when the floor is already full.

Step 1: measure the real space, not the floor plan

  • Measure wall to wall at floor height. Skirting boards, radiators and pipes take space that floor plans leave out.
  • Write down the depth too: from the wall to where the walkway starts.
  • Use one unit. cm or inches are both fine, just do not mix them.

Step 2: check the walkway you will have left

Furniture that technically fits but leaves no path will annoy you every day. The tool uses these rules of thumb:

  • About 60 cm (24 in) beside a bed.
  • About 75-90 cm (30-36 in) for main paths through a room.

Step 3: check the way in

Measure the narrowest door, hallway or stair turn between the street and the room. The piece has to pass through on its smallest side, which is usually the depth. Flat-pack furniture usually avoids the problem. A built sofa or cabinet often does not.

Worked examples from the tool

Each example uses a real IKEA size from the listing:

Where can I put it? Use height and walls without drilling

If the floor is full, go up. These options do not need holes in the wall.

Tension rods fit inside an opening, such as an alcove, a closet or a window recess, and hold a curtain to hide shelves or a bed zone. Measure the opening first. These two fit 28-48 in:

Tall, narrow shelving uses wall height instead of floor. Anchoring a tall unit to the wall usually means a screw, so check your lease and ask the landlord.

More ideas: no-drill storage and splitting a studio into zones.

Checklist before you click "buy"

Questions

How much space should I leave around furniture?

About 75-90 cm (30-36 in) for main walkways and about 60 cm (24 in) beside a bed.

How do I know if a sofa will fit through my door?

Measure the narrowest door or hallway on the way in. The sofa must pass through on its smallest side, usually the depth. Measure the real piece, not just the listing.

Can I put up shelves in a rental?

Free-standing shelves need no holes. Anything screwed to the wall depends on your lease, so ask first.

  • Floor plans are drawn by code to scale. Rooms are example sizes; IKEA footprints come from the listing, other pieces are drawn at a typical size. Measure your own room and piece.

  • Order follows the layout (main piece first) or price, never commission.
